My interpretation of a mid shot is that it is very similar to a medium shot i.e the subject is only visible from possibly on the waist up, but it may also have another specification, that the subject being the focal point is in the centre of the image.
Similar to Medium shot, this may have been used to draw more attention to the main focal point of the scene i.e Merlin, to highlight his facial expressions or actions in more detail. This may result in the audience paying closer attention to the actions conducted by the main focal point (Merlin).
